Owners of Golden Retriever dogs should not be worried that their pets are more troublesome than worth caring for just because they are difficult to groom.
Golden Retriever grooming can be a challenge but as long as you love your pet, this is something you will do with all your heart.
In the same light, grooming your Golden Retriever is not only about brushing its coat and cleaning its teeth. There are many things you need to do to ensure that your dog gets the best care and let it live a healthy life.
But where should you start and what should be your focus areas? Below we will show you how to groom your pet.
Grooming the Coat
As with many other dogs, Golden Retriever grooming starts with the coat. Keep in mind that different types of coats need different styles and frequency of grooming. Grooming the coat is not only about brushing and removing dead hair.
Golden Retriever dogs need daily brushing, especially those with long coats, because brushing stimulates the body’s oil glands.
These oil glands release substances that keep the coat shiny and healthy and this reduces hair fall. Brushing also massages the dog and this is something that dogs really like.
While brushing the dog, check for lumps on the skin. Lumps are symptoms of potentially bigger problems and it is highly recommended that you take the dog to a vet right away. This will assure good Golden Retriever health.
In addition, fleas and ticks are also likely to move away if you brush your dog frequently. Fleas and ticks do not like to be disturbed and you will find them easily if you brush your dog daily.
Golden Retrievers have a double coat so it is essential to check if you have brushed the undercoat. Using a flat brush will only brush the top or outer coat but this may leave mattes on the underside.
Golden Retriever grooming, particularly coat brushing, should begin at the front and then work the way to the back. Brush the neck and ears thoroughly and then proceed to the shoulders, elbows, and front legs. Next, brush the belly and move to the hind legs.
Finally, brush the tail. Keep in mind that you need to brush your dog in the same fashion every grooming time so the dog knows what to expect. If the dog has short coat, brushing once a week will suffice. Long coats require daily brushing.
Grooming the Ears
Good Golden Retriever health is also subject to regular ear grooming. The ear is a susceptible area where mites can breed. If you observe your dog to be scratching its ears often, this is a sign that the dog may have ear problems.
To groom the ears, you need to start with cutting the fuzzy hair on the outer ears. After three cuts, brush the ears and observe if you get the desired look.
Do not completely remove the hair; just thin it. Next, cut the long hair on the inner part of the ear. Be careful when doing this as you may hurt the dog. If your dog has a heavily coated ear, you will need to repeat the process of cutting and brushing several times.
Next, get cotton buds and clean up your dog’s ear. Do not use oils or any product that we normally use for humans. Water should suffice. Be careful not to clean too deeply because this will hurt the dog.
Golden Retriever grooming is a challenge only if you do not make the grooming sessions regular. Dogs will run away from you and will sometimes nip and bite while you are grooming them.
Patience is a key factor to succeed in grooming your dog. This should become a habit not only for the dog but for you as well.
